The huge baitschools attract sailfish and juvenile black marlin as well as other pelagics including several varieties of tuna and mackerel. The shoals are excellent sport fishing destinations for giant trevally, jobfish and cobia and along with the Reef also fish well for great food fish such as red emperor, nannygai and coral trout. The area is also frequented during these winter months by humpback whales and often their calves, and many anglers are delighted with their encounters with these gentle giants. The Cape Bowling Green billfishing grounds have also become a popular destination for salt-water fly fishermen because of the number of 'shots' that can be had on billfish there. It is not uncommon for one boat to raise up to 30 fish in a day giving the angler more opportunity to hone the skills required using this equipment. For other anglers the challenge is to use very light tackle. Billfish here are have been captured on line as light as 1 kg, with 6kg and 10kg being the more conventional choices.
