Townsville/Cape Bowling Green Light Tackle Fishing

Cape Bowling Green and the offshore reefs provide action aplenty. Huge baitschools attract sailfish, juvenile black marlin and other pelagics including tuna and mackerel. The Reef also fishes well for food fish such as red emperor, nannygai and coral trout. In winter, humpback whales and their calves frequent the area also.

CBG has also become a popular destination for salt-water fly fishermen because of the number of shots that can be had. A boat can raise up to 30 fish in a day giving the angler more opportunity to hone the skills. For other anglers the challenge is to use very light tackle. Nearly all billfish are tagged and released - as such, the CBG has a higher than normal recapture ratio for tagged fish.

Cape Bowling Green is 30 miles east of Townsville and has excellent overnight anchorages for overnight and/or extended live aboard trips. Bookings are essential.
