Intro

With the market of low profile baitcaster reels completely overpopulated by hundreds of different reels to choose from, it seems that nowadays there is little space in the bass anglers’ universe for round reels. There are just two of the most famous manufacturers that are still releasing new products on this segment, and one of these is Abu Garcia.

Abu Garcia’s origins go back to 1921 in Sweden, manufacturing pocket watches, telephone timers and taxi meters. They began manufacturing high quality fishing reels right after World War II, and haven’t stopped ever since.

Manufactured in Sweden, the Abu Garcia C4 Round Reel has a silky-smooth operation and an immense amount of power. It features a Carbon Matrix dragging system which provides a smooth performance and up to 15 lbs of maximum drag pressure, and a centrifugal brake system that ensures consistency through the entire range.

While round reels are becoming more rare within the fishing reels market, with the release of the C4 Abu Garcia has created a very good option for those of you looking for round reels, covering up all needs of today’s bass fisherman.

Main Usage

The Abu Garcia C4 is a round baitcasting reel. It is perfectly suitable for saltwater as it is for fresh water, thanks to its corrosion resistance properties. This is a great advantage because it saves you from the cost of having to buy a different reel for each type of water. Even though it’s approved for saltwater use, it is recommended to clean the reel with fresh water after every use at saltwater.

Round baitcasting reels like the C4 are round in cross-section. When comparing them to the Low Profile reels (which are the other conventional kind of reels used for baitcasting), round reels hold more line, are usually a bit stronger, and are better for throwing bait.

The Abu Garcia C4 is a baitcasting reel. Baitcasting is a fishing technique that consists on throwing a bail with a fishing line out over the water using a flexible fishing rod. There are many different techniques that can be used by anglers as an attempt to cast further, making this kind of fishing challenging and exciting. The most common technique is to shift the body weight towards the front foot in correlation to the forward movement of the rod. For salt water fishing, rods and lines are usually heavier.

Product Features

Reel Body/Housing/Frame:

Visually, the Abu Garcia C4 is a very nice looking, blue colored reel. It’s made of polished aluminum. All parts are put together in a very solid way and the reel doesn’t have any alignment problems or unusual spaces between the parts. The metal handle doesn’t have any kind of play, while the knobs have some room as they are pushed and pulled away from the reel’s body. The Abu Garcia C4 features an impressive ergonomic design, with a compact handle.

Drag system:

The Abu Garcia C4 series feature a Carbon Matrix Drag System that is as elegant as it is tough, and works as smooth as it gets. The drag type of this fishing reel is Star Drag, and the drag material is carbon fiber.

The maximum drag pressure that the Abu Garcia C4 can withstand according to the product specifications provided by the manufacturer is 15 lbs, which is more than enough drag power to cast most of the popular fish species at the water. But what’s more important is that it really maintains a smooth, consistent pressure that ensures great protection to the line.

Casting Controls:

The casting department is where this reel most shines. The casting performance of the Abu Garcia C4 is almost identical to one of the C3 series. It has a great casting distance and performs smoothly. It features a 6 pin centrifugal braking system that provides consistency in pressure through the entire range.

A centrifugal brake system uses the friction of brake blocks pressed inside of brake ring. This old school centrifugal system that Abu Garcia has chosen for this reel is pretty much a set and forget kind of system. The only possible downside to this braking system is that a dissemblance of the reel is required in order to adjust its setting

Ball Bearings:

The Abu Garcia C4 series feature a 4+1 bearings system. This is another difference when comparing to the C3 series, which has a 3+1 bearings system. The C4 has four ball bearings made of stainless steel, plus another extra roller bearing that ensures smoothness on the reel’s operation.

The mission of the ball bearings on fishing reels is to reduce friction between moving parts, helping to keep the reel moving nice and freely under loads produced from the drag and winding.

Conclusion:

In summary, it is highly appreciated that the Swedish Abu Garcia keeps making round baitcasting reels after seeing what they’ve created here with the Abu Garcia C4. Its casting performance is much better than in most fishing reels within any price range, including the high-end extremely expensive ones.

The centrifugal brake system is also another highlight, since it works very well; even if it’s not easy to get to adjust the settings, the birght side is that it’s mostly a set and forget kind of system that does not need many adjustments.

This reel is perfectly assembled and it is impressive how everything feels so precise in terms of construction. The Abu Garcia C4 gives a great bang for the buck, and is highly recommended as one of the best round baitcasting reels in the market right now.
